The student will demonstrate knowledge of the geography and early inhabitants of Virginia by

a)     locating Virginia and its bordering states on maps of the United States;

b)     locating and describing Virginia’s Coastal Plain (Tidewater), Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau;

c)     locating and identifying water features important to the early history of Virginia (Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, James River, York River, Potomac River, and Rappahannock River);

d)     locating three American Indian (First American) language groups (the Algonquian, the Siouan, and the Iroquoian) on a map of Virginia;

e)     describing how American Indians (First Americans) adapted to the climate and their environment to secure food, clothing, and shelter.

Eastern Woodland Indians Posters

This site includes postcard sized posters representing the three major language groups of the Indians and the regions they lived in primarily, how Eastern Indians adapted to their climate/environment.  Further down the list of posters is a selection of geography posters.  These posters include the regions of Virginia, the surrounding states, water features and ways to remember the rivers of Virginia.

Chesapeake Bay: Our History and Our Future

This site, maintained by the Mariner’s Museum, includes pages of information about the Native Americans, Colonial Americans, 20th Century and Economy. Students can find specific information about the lives of Powhatan women and children and the Powhatan lifestyles.

A Virtual Tour of the Eastern Woodland Indians Homestead

While visiting this site, students will be able to see pictures, and read descriptions of the Eastern Woodlands Indians' everyday life, including at work and at play.
